About the job
This process engineering role will contribute across the R&D, engineering and manufacturing groups. In R&D, this individual will support process development projects for adsorbent manufacturing processes in NuMat’s development pipeline. In engineering, this individual will execute small capital projects. In manufacturing, this person will support the mission critical production operations at NuMat. This will require interfacing on a daily basis with manufacturing, commercial, R&D and engineering teams to achieve production targets and to execute productivity improvement projects. Expect full ownership of projects with freedom to build up new processes and the expectation to roll up your sleeves in the plant and lab.
Responsibilities
Process Development and Technology Transfer
Lead R&D projects to develop robust, reproducible, and safe processes for MOF manufacturing.
Develop and run experiments to identify key process variables and correlate to system-level performance.
Use chemical engineering design principles to select and size equipment for adsorbent manufacturing processes.
Develop technology transfer packages for process commercialization (operation procedures, quality gate, etc.).
Develop and update cost models and perform sensitivity analysis.
Develop & maintain process guidelines (SOP/SOC) and training programs for the integration of new products and systems.
Reduce process variation (improve process capability) to ensure consistent product quality and adherence to manufacturing standards.
Production Support
Support production through NuMat distributed supply-chain network (onsite and offsite).
Act as first line of support for technical troubleshooting, issue escalation.
Assist in development and improvement of control plans, work instructions and track production yield, rate and quality performance data.
Engineering Projects
Perform basic design, detailed design, procurement, and Process Hazard Review for small capital engineering and R&D projects.
Develop procedures, write preventative maintenance plans, and take projects through commissioning into operation.
Support engineering standards development at NuMat.
Individual Characteristics
You have direct experience in operating gas-phase break-through apparatuses, and characterizing and analyzing data.
You have application engineer experience in companies related to gas/liquid filtration/separation.
You are knowledgeable on characterizing/analyzing microporous materials and their applications in wide ranges of industrial applications.
You are innovative and familiar with test protocols in the above-mentioned fields.
You enjoy designing/building systems and scientific apparatus in separation science related fields.
You are detail-oriented and passionate about converting abstract concepts into a prototype.
You are familiar with the measurement and control of flow rate, pressure, temperature, valves, vacuum components used in common liquid and gas delivery manifolds.
You are familiar with pipe and tube fittings (NPT, compression, VCR, flange, etc.)
You are familiar with LabView and/or other control and data-logging platforms.
Preferably, you have a working knowledge of liquid and gas analytical equipment (i.e. FT-IR, GC, mass spec, HPLC.)
Preferably, you have experience with electrical and control wiring.
NuMat Technologies (“NuMat”) is a start-up company innovating at the intersection of high-performance computing, chemistry and advanced manufacturing. NuMat is a recognized pioneer in the field of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) — an emerging class of nanomaterials which can be programmed to uniquely interact with target molecules at the atomic level. NuMat’s expertise lies in the design and integration of MOFs into next-generation storage, separation and purification systems. In doing so, NuMat enables previously unachievable form factors, performance and cost-advantaged production economics in the electronics, life-sciences and energy sectors.
