PROCESS ENGINEERING

Type of Job

FULL TIME

About the job

The development engineer role will contribute to new technology development at NuMat for manufacturing technology and for new products. In manufacturing development, this individual will support process development projects for adsorbent manufacturing processes in NuMat’s development pipeline. In product development, this individual will shepherd new technology through the stages 3 and 4 (out of 5) of NuMat’s stage-gate process. This will require interfacing with manufacturing, commercial, research, and engineering teams. Expect full ownership of projects with freedom to build up new processes and the expectation to roll up your sleeves in the plant and lab.

Responsibilities

Manufacturing Development and Technology Transfer

  • Lead R&D projects to develop robust, reproducible, and safe processes for MOF manufacturing

  • Develop and run experiments to identify key process variables and correlate to system-level performance

  • Use chemical engineering design principles to select and size equipment for adsorbent manufacturing processes

  • Develop technology transfer packages for process commercialization (operation procedures, quality gate, etc.)

  • Develop and update cost models and perform sensitivity analysis

  • Develop & maintain process guidelines (SOP/SOC) and training programs for the integration of new products and systems

  • Reduce process variation (improve process capability) to ensure consistent product quality and adherence to manufacturing standards

Product and Process Development

  • Lead R&D projects to design systems and processes around high performing adsorbents

  • Design and execute experiments to demonstrate system level performance, identify key process variables, validate stability and lifetime and define operating windows.

  • Develop data packages to support business and commercial teams in product commercialization

  • Design pilot and demo-scale systems to aid in product commercialization.

Individual Characteristics
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, resource-constrained, entrepreneurial environment where everyone must play multiple roles

  • Willing to be hands-on in all facets of the operations – no job is too big or small (familiarity with basic tools, shop experience preferred)

  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and cross-cultural communication skills: able to distill complex information and present clearly

  • Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Chemical Engineering

  • Full-time experience in a manufacturing environment, in a front-line operation, or engineering position (background in managing or overseeing batch chemical synthesis strongly preferred)

  • Experience in R&D is highly valued

  • Familiarity with chemical processes and equipment (e.g. batch reactors, filtration, centrifugation, formation, etc.)

  • Experience managing batch chemical production campaigns, including at tollers, highly valued

  • Experience working with hazardous chemicals

NuMat Technologies (“NuMat”) is a start-up company innovating at the intersection of high-performance computing, chemistry and advanced manufacturing. NuMat is a recognized pioneer in the field of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) — an emerging class of nanomaterials which can be programmed to uniquely interact with target molecules at the atomic level. NuMat’s expertise lies in the design and integration of MOFs into next-generation storage, separation and purification systems. In doing so, NuMat enables previously unachievable form factors, performance and cost-advantaged production economics in the electronics, life-sciences and energy sectors.
