Precious metals such as Palladium (Pd) are often used in catalytic solutions during API manufacturing. After a batch of synthesis is finished, the reaction solution must be treated to prevent metals, some of them potentially harmful if ingested by humans, from continuing downstream through the API synthesis process. Recent increases in precious metal prices has incentivized drug manufacturers to not only capture the metals, but recover them as well.
